I believe it’s a post each of us can relate to in some way or another, and that even if the circumstances are a little different in your life, the message could still be helpful. *** 
One day this past week, I woke up to a series of desperate sounding texts a friend had sent me in the middle of the night. They seemed random; fired off in quick succession. My eyes were barely open, but I could sense that something was terribly wrong.
I wandered over to the coffee pot and poured myself a steaming cup of coffee. I settled into the couch, took a deep breath, and started making my way through her texts.
She told me she “hadn’t intended to go looking.”
In fact, she’d spent months convincing herself she was “imagining the distance between them.”
She assured me that over the past few months, she had asked questions.
Tried to reconnect.
Wondered if it was stress…
work…
age…
exhaustion…
Anything but what her heart feared.
She’d flat out asked if he was having an affair. He laughed. “No,” he said quietly. “There isn’t anybody else.”
It was the answer she had wanted, so she was pacified for a few weeks. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that something in her husband’s countenance was different— “off”. Even though she couldn’t put her finger on what.
She wasn’t a “snooper” by nature. But eventually, after weeks of watching him come to bed late and drift off into a heavy sleep without acknowledging her, her fears got the best of her.
The wife who had always trusted started snooping. Closets. Drawers. Even inside the boots he hasn’t worn in years.
In her texts, she admitted that she had systematically turned her house upside down, finding very little “incriminating” evidence. But she couldn’t shake the feeling.
You see, Fear has a way of making detectives out of people who never wanted the job.
Her texts continued. Last night, while he was sleeping— she said she finally got the courage to go through his phone.
And everything changed.
She didn’t describe the pictures in much detail. She didn’t have to.
Sometimes the human imagination can create wounds far deeper than the evidence itself.
Within seconds, her mind had already written an entire story about her marriage.
For a long time, I just stared at my phone.
Not so much because I didn’t know what to say… but because I suddenly realized there probably wasn’t anything I could say that would make this disappear.
I kept thinking… this is what secrecy does to us.
This is what staying silent does.
It’s about the stories our minds tell us when someone we love won’t let us into their world.
It’s about the damage fear is capable of when our safety feels threatened. And virtually nothing is more threatening than having to admit you didn’t know your partner had a secret fantasy life you’ve never been invited to enter.
After the coffee kicked in and my head had had time to clear, I called her. Not with probing questions. Not with advice. Just to give her a safe space to breathe.
One comment she made is still swirling around in my head.
“Ledonna, I don’t even want him to touch me! I close my eyes and imagine him replacing me with the images in his phone.”
Her trembling voice broke but after a moment, she found the courage to keep talking.
“Twenty year old college kids?? I can’t compete with that! And honestly? It makes me want to curl up in my fuzzy bathrobe and not even try! I used to feel like …I was at least holding my own. Not young. Not gorgeous. But desirable. Worthy. Like what we had was special. And oftentimes, even hot! Now?? I don’t think I will ever feel truly desirable again. I will always feel like the choice he is stuck with instead of the choice he would make if he could.”
And my heart hurt because I knew exactly what she meant.
When we are wounded, we don’t just see an image—we see a measuring stick. And suddenly we are comparing our real, complicated, beautiful humanity against something specifically designed to be fantasy.
These images didn’t show the “cost” of doing life. They were free of stretch marks. Cellulite.
Their clothing wasn’t stained with baby spittle. They were free of children. Responsibility. Emotional “heaviness”.
She was right. How does a real woman living in the trenches of everyday life compete with that??
As she talked, I realized my friend wasn’t grieving the images on the screen.
She was grieving the woman she believed she had been just twenty-four hours earlier.
The woman who felt chosen.
Safe.
Enough.
I took a deep breath and swallowed hard. I tried to just listen; to be a safe place for her to vent. It was hard.
She’s a beautiful human and I hated to see her hurting.
But also because everything she was sharing made my own female insecurities bristle. After all, if this could happen in her marriage, it could happen to any of us!
I don’t know yet what their story will become.
I don’t know what conversations they’ll have.
I don’t know whether trust will come back easily or slowly.
But I do know this…
The choices of another person—even someone we love deeply—cannot be allowed to become the measuring stick for our worth.
Here’s something else: History is full of strikingly gorgeous women.
Women whose husbands still wandered.
Maybe that’s because betrayal has never really been about finding someone more beautiful.
Maybe it’s always been about something missing inside the betrayer that physical beauty was never capable of filling.
That is something I think we all need to be reminded of…
We cannot allow someone else’s brokenness, poor choices, or unmet places to become the baseline for grading ourselves.
Because sometimes betrayal comes from selfishness. Sometimes addiction. Sometimes unresolved wounds. Sometimes entitlement. Sometimes avoidance. Sometimes fear.
But the common thread is: it belongs to them.
It doesn’t erase the hurt to remember that the people we love are capable of failing us.
But neither does their failure erase their humanity.
Two broken truths can exist in the same room.
Someone can deeply wound you… and still be someone worth praying for.
Someone can betray your trust… and still not be beyond redemption.
Marriages can experience heart-wrenching circumstances, and still be rebuilt into something worth saving.
Maybe today you’re carrying questions you never wanted to ask.
Maybe someone else’s choices have made you question your own value.
Sister…
The choices of another person…
even someone you love…
may deeply wound your heart.
They may change your relationship.
They may birth grief.
They may require boundaries.
But they do not get to define your value.
There is a profound difference between asking,
“What happened to us?”
and asking,
“What’s wrong with me?”
Pain always demands an explanation.
And when the person we love won’t—or can’t—give us one, we usually invent one ourselves.
Unfortunately, the explanation we invent almost always begins with us.
Maybe I’m not enough.
Maybe I’ve gotten old.
Maybe I let myself go.
Maybe he settled.
Our hearts become prosecutors against ourselves long before the evidence has finished speaking.
I have lived long enough now to know that every marriage has rooms no one else gets to see. After decades of walking this earth, I’ve watched beautiful people disappoint one another.
I’ve watched faithful people grow weary. I’ve watched good people hide things they should have confessed years earlier. I’ve watched wounded people deeply hurt the people they loved most.
Age has cured me of believing there are “those kinds of people” and “our kind of people.”
There are only people.
People capable of extraordinary faithfulness… and astonishing foolishness. Sometimes in the very same week.
I’ve learned enough about people—including myself—to know that brokenness doesn’t surprise God. But I also know it doesn’t get the final word.
Maybe that is the hardest part of becoming.
Realizing that the people we love are human.
Realizing that we are human.
Realizing that all of us carry places where we need grace.
But sister…
Your worth was never secured by someone else’s ability to see it.
Your beauty was never dependent on someone else’s attention.
Your value was never placed in the hands of another imperfect person.
Before anyone chose you…
God already did.
Before anyone saw your beauty…
He already knew it.
Before anyone called you enough…
He had already created you intentionally.
The choices of others may change your story.
They may break your heart.
They may force you into seasons you never wanted.
But they do not get to rewrite who you are.
Because the Author of your story has not stepped away from the page.
And brokenness…
no matter how painful…
never gets the final word.
